BROWARD COUNTY, FL– Broward County Commission’s Cultural Division invites City Mayors, City Managers, Parks & Recreation Directors, City & Facility Managers to participate in a County Cultural Forum on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 2:00 pm at Susan B. Katz Theatre of the Performing Arts at the Pembroke Pines River of Grass ArtsPark, located at the Academic Village, 17189 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines.
The forum will consist of an update by the Cultural Division on the latest opportunities for municipalities. In addition, there will be a presentation of the Broward County-wide Community Design Guidebook; an update on the Public Art 30th Anniversary planning; arts education workshops and opportunities; Design Arts Program and National Endowment for the Arts updates. All this will be followed by a tour of the Pembroke Pines River of Grass ArtsPark and an update on its programming.
Broward County-wide Community Design Guidebook, written by Architect Anthony Abbate and presented to the County’s Department of Urban Planning and Redevelopment in January 2005, focuses on the influences of transportation, urban design, landscape, architecture, signage and graphic design on a community style. Abbate and a team of planners, architects, graphic designers, landscape architects and environmental designers conducted a series of workshops with local professionals and planners from the community to develop a series of patterns that could be used to “improve the quality of the design in the public space and generate an authentic sense of place in Broward County.”
Broward Cultural Division’s County Cultural Forum program is the recipient of a 2003 National Association of County Officers (NACo) Achievement Award in recognition of the work to promote responsible, responsive and effective county government. “We hope city and civic leaders will take advantage of this opportunity.” says Division Director Mary Becht. “This is a chance for municipalities to share regional cultural services and learn about the competitive advantages of other creative cities.”
The County Cultural Forum is hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines. Please RSVP by Wednesday, May 18, 2005 by calling 954-357-7457. For other information call Steve Glassman, arts education and community development program manager at 954-357-7532 or email sglassman@broward.org.
