The Most Comprehensive Arts Integration Conference in South Florida 17 Interactive Workshops to Expand Instructional Style

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County Cultural Division, The Cultural Foundation of Broward, Dillard Center for the Arts , Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the School Board of Broward County and the Broward Education Foundation, present the fifth annual conference on arts integration—Exercising Creativity: Developing the Whole Child Through the Arts, on Wednesday, August 13, 2008. This year’s conference will be held at two venues - Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue, and Dillard Center for the Arts, 2501 NW 11th St., in Fort Lauderdale, from 7:30 am to 4:15 pm.

Exercising Creativity: Developing the Whole Child Through the Arts focuses on using arts instruction to demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices along with creative activities that help to stimulate students both mentally and physically. Since many of the performing arts require physical activity, this conference will reinforce the interconnectedness between arts and physical education as essential elements in developing the whole child. Conference workshops will expose teachers to the use of drama, dance, music, reader’s theater, painting, and sculpture to excite and energize students. Workshops include: Reaching the Kinesthetic Learner Through Creative Movement; Exploring Sequences in Mathematics: Dance, Flamenco; Thinking Tools and the Multidisciplinary Imagination; Physical Problem Solving: Math Dance; Moving Ideas: Integrating Science and Dance; Teaching Persuasive Writing.

Workshop leaders from Kennedy Center for the Performing Art’s roster will be presenting, along with local teaching artists and university faculty. These presenters are highly-skilled, nationally-recognized arts integration experts. Studying with them in this “master class” format is a rare opportunity for Broward teachers. Each presenter is a specialist in arts integration in a different core curriculum area. Dr. Maria Barbosa will be presenting new ideas in English as a Second Language (ESOL), while Eric Johnson will focus on the special needs of educators who work with developmentally challenged students. Dr. Karl Schaffer will link movement to teaching math concepts while Lutricia Welters will be connecting science ideas with dance.

The workshops create a heightened understanding of the power of the arts to facilitate learning in all academic areas. The conference is the only FREE event of its kind in Broward County and is a project of the 1993 Kennedy Center Partners in Education Team. Participants will have the opportunity to take two three-hour workshops. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided.
