Affordable apartments for rent, specifically for artists, will be offered in the Sailboat Bend area of Fort Lauderdale. The Broward County Board of County Commissioners has secured a unique and unprecedented partnership designed to create an affordable live/work arts facility designed for artists and their families. Funds for the project will come from SHIP and HOME government funding programs.

These 37 affordable units are a part of the unique partnership between the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, Artspace, the Broward County Cultural Division and Lennar Homes, a for-profit developer that has built condos and townhouses on the site. As an additional component of the project, Artspace will also restore the historic West Side School and turn it into a home for the Broward County Historical Commission and its impressive collection of artifacts and historical memorabilia.

“This is a unique partnership between the County, the development community and a not-for-profit organization with the goal of providing affordable housing to our residents,” said Commissioner John Rodstom, who represents the Sailboat Bend neighborhood. “This is an unprecedented relationship, and one that will directly benefit our artistic community.”

These units will only be available to eligible tenants who make 60 percent or less of Broward County’s annual median income (AMI). The most recent available statistics have Broward’s AMI as $58,000; therefore an eligible applicant for one of these rental units earns $34,800 or less annually.

In addition, the rental units feature a deed restriction that will ensure long-term affordability for the next 50 years. If Artspace, the owner of the units, sells the units in the next 50 years, the restriction will remain.
