BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County Commission’s Cultural Division continues its 30th year celebration of Broward County’s Public Art and Design Program during 2006, with invaluable advice and inside information from Minneapolis-based, Artspace Projects President, L. Kelley Lindquist. This grand finale, Speaker’s Forum lecture will be held on December 5, 2006—5:30 pm – reception, 6:00 pm - speakers—at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, as part of VisionBROWARD’s International Holiday Reception and Awards Program.

The discussion topic will be the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts—a $13 million project that broke ground this past June. Also speaking will be Jaynie L. Smith, President ICS Marketing, Inc., and Rick Gilbert, Sun-Sentinel Marketing Research Manager.

L. Kelley Lindquist has been president of Artspace Projects since 1987. Under his leadership, Artspace has grown into the nation’s leading nonprofit developer of space for artists with stewardship of 18 major projects in nine states containing more than 1.5 million square feet of residential, studio, office, rehearsal, and performance space.

Mr. Lindquist’s expertise places him in high demand as a consultant and speaker, and frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences on the role of artists and arts facilities in urban revitalization. He was recently interviewed on China’s national television network while co-leading a cultural delegation studying the Silk Road and current trends in the visual arts in western China.

As part of a larger ‘for sale’ community developed by Lennar Homes Inc., contractors broke ground on the project that will initially bring 37 new lofts to artists. Construction is expected to be completed in 2007.

In addition to its residential component, the Sailboat Bend project will involve the renovation of one of Fort Lauderdale’s historic buildings, the West Side School. Dating from 1923, the West Side School is one of Fort Lauderdale’s original four schools, only three of which survive. The project will preserve the building and transform it into a home for the Broward County Historical Commission and the county’s historical archive.

Artists interested in living and working at the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts can sign up for e-mail updates at www.artspacesailboatbend.org. Selection of residents, expected to begin next spring, will be done through a process of interviews by a panel of peers. Applicants will be required to show a significant commitment to their art form. Because the project involves affordable housing, applicants will also have to go through an income qualification process.

There is no charge for this lecture, but space is limited. To RSVP for this event go to www.visionBROWARD.org.
