Panel discussion to be presented twice, February 22 and February 23

BROWARD COUNTY, FL– Broward County Commission’s Cultural Division and VisionBROWARD will host a series of lectures throughout 2006 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Broward County’s Public Art and Design Program. This premier lecture, Buildings Are Our Legacy, features architects Chuck Reed, Donald Singer and Anthony Abbate in a panel discussion that traces the architectural sensibilities and the lineage of influences between these architects and their work, and will include a discussion on the influential work of internationally renowned architect, Igor Polevitzky.

The panel discussion is to be held first on February 22, 2006 at 6:00 pm, at the City of Miramar, City Center’s Commission Chambers, 2300 Civic Center Place in Miramar incorporation with the VisionBROWARD Town Hall series. The architectural panel discussion will be repeated again on February 23, 2006 at 7:00 pm, at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, 1650 Harrison Street in Hollywood. Featured guest moderator on February 23 is Beth Dunlop, award-winning architectural reporter and author who works for the Miami Herald. She was awarded the Critic’s Medal from the American Institute of Architects and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Highlighted during both panel discussions will be the unique architectural style of some of the wonderful homes that Chuck Reed has designed in the area. In addition to Reed’s connection and influence on the South Florida region’s architects, the discussion will review the work of these architects and how they have contributed to South Florida, the County, and the community’s architectural history and design characteristics. Polevitzky was a Bauhaus devotee credited with the invention of nautical art deco architecture seen in many of the hotels of South Florida.

VisionBROWARD is a community economic development partnership, undertaken by The Broward County Board of County Commissioners, The Broward Alliance, The Broward Workshop, Broward League of Cities and the project's facilitators, Nova Southeastern University. The mission is to chart the future course of Broward County and design and promote the continued development and redevelopment of the region.

To continually reach out to the community, the Town Hall meetings throughout the County discuss the recommendations of the taskforces including: transportation, redevelopment, creative industries, education/workforce development, health/safety, regionalism, and business development, and report on progress made. The purpose is to further familiarize people with the goals and recommendations of VisionBROWARD and solicit community feedback.
