More than 200 businessmen, arts officiates, artists, county commissioners, government dignitaries and interested members of the public, gathered to celebrate on an evening in January.

BROWARD COUNTY, FL– It was as evening to remember. It marked an official point in the Year 2006—the moment that the County proclaimed 2006 as The Year of Public Art. And “the first time that an entire year was dedicated to anything in my history with the County,” said Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin as she read the proclamation.

More than 200 guests filled the auditorium of the Broward County Main library and listened as Earl Bosworth, assistant director, Broward Cultural Division began the evening with a proud tribute to public art as a symbol of community pride; Ricardo Zulueta, public art and design administrator for the Division, took the crowd through a history of Public Art, and architect and Broward Cultural Council Chair Anthony Abbate, talked about a Broward County long before Public Art, and then listed the year-long schedule of events meant to commemorate this grand anniversary. Florida Atlantic University Masters student, Tennille Shuster’s video presentation was screened throughout the evening as well—a presentation that captured the essence of the program in its entirety.

The 30-year anniversary of Broward County’s Public Art and Design program did not go un-noticed. “In an environment where Americans for the Arts, the national leader in this industry, is 40 years old, and Broward County itself, is only 90 years old—these 30 years are quite significant,” said Bosworth.

The evening went on to include a presentation by artist Dan Corson, of a spectacular light-based public art proposal specifically commissioned for this anniversary, and to be revealed at the year’s end in December 2006. To culminate the evening Bosworth invited the audience to ‘light up Broward County together” with glow sticks furnished to them on entrance. The hall lights were dimmed, and the darkness glowed with a multi-colored show. It was an evening to remember.
