Along with a Poster Signing for Wendy Wischer’s Bus Wraps Artwork, ‘Parallel’ BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art and Design Program invites members of the community to a ‘Meet and Greet’ with artists Wendy Wischer, Mary Lou Siefker, Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov, on Thursday, April 23, Noon to 1:00 p.m., at the Lee Wagener Art Gallery at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Terminal 2, Departures Level. Wendy Wischer will also be signing posters of her artwork, Parallel, presently wrapping the buses in the Rental Car Center’s shuttle fleet that transports passengers between the airport’s terminals and the rental car facility.
Parallel is a temporary art project using graphic design and hi-tech printed vinyl to wrap the airport’s shuttle buses. The design is inspired by the mangrove tree, also known as the walking tree, which has its roots holding South Florida together. The images have been duplicated and reversed to create a mirror effect horizontally and vertically.
Wendy Wischer creates conceptually-based work in a variety of media ranging from photography to sculptural objects, to site-specific installations, video and public works. Much of the work is based on blurring the separation between the intrinsic history of working with nature and the cutting edge of “New Media.”
Mary Lou Siefker’s artwork, Journey Through Life with Paint, is displayed in the newly opened Lee Wagener Art Gallery. For this temporary exhibition, Siefker says, “these ‘images,’ or ‘people shapes’ as I refer to them, are loosely figural in form, and emerge from the vibrant, teeming surfaces I create through the thick application of acrylic paint mixed with other media.” Siefker has been a resident of Fort Lauderdale for more than three decades. She has taught painting and design at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, and has worked as a docent in the education department at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University.
Tree-Rain by Broward-based artists Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov has also been installed at the Lee Wagener Art Gallery. This video artwork is one of a series of recent works based on the massive Birch State Park banyan tree in Fort Lauderdale, and inspired by Russian symbolist poet, Andrei Bely’s, 1922, Glossolalia. Scherer and Ouporov are a collaborative team who met while studying at the renowned Moscow Surikov State Academy Art Institute—one of Russia’s two institutions of higher arts education and part of the Russian Academy of Arts established in 1757 by Peter the Great.
Parking for the event is free. Attendees must bring their parking tickets to the gallery for validation. For more information, contact Christina Roldan, Public Art and Design project manager at 954-357-8542 or e-mail croldan@broward.org. |
